Colonel Nathaniel Doherty
Colonel Nathaniel Doherty entered Marine Corps boot camp on 2 August 1989, at MCRD San Diego, California. After completing boot camp and Marine Combat Training, Private Doherty was trained as a nuclear, biological, and chemical defense specialist.
After graduation, he reported to NBC Platoon, 3rd Force Service Support Group, Okinawa, Japan. In 1992, he reported to Marine Security Guard (MSG) School. After graduation, Sergeant Doherty served as the assistant detachment commander for both the U.S. Embassy in Georgetown, Guyana, and the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, Canada.
In 1995, he reported to 2nd Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Intelligence Group to serve as the NBC chief. During this tour, he was promoted to staff sergeant.
In 1998, Staff Sergeant Doherty was selected for the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program. In 2001, Gunnery Sergeant Doherty graduated college and was commissioned as a second lieutenant.
After completing Officer Candidates School and The Basic School, he attended CI/HUMINT school. After graduation in 2002, he reported to 3rd Intelligence Battalion, Okinawa, Japan. During this tour, he deployed to the U.S. Embassy Bangladesh, where he served as the PACOM counterterrorism liaison officer. He also deployed to the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Australia, and Thailand. He also deployed to Camp Fallujah, Iraq to serve as the HUMINT Exploitation Team command; during this deployment he was promoted to captain.
In 2006, he assumed command of 3rd CI/HUMINT Company, 3rd Intelligence Battalion and in 2007, he served as the III MEF CI/HUMINT officer. During this tour, he deployed to Bangladesh to serve the 3rd MEB S2 for Operation SEA ANGEL II, a humanitarian assistance operation in Bangladesh.
In 2008, Captain Doherty was selected to serve as the Marine officer instructor at Oregon State University. He was promoted to major in 2011 and reported to U.S. Central Command. During this tour, Major Doherty was selected to attend the Air Force Command and Staff College.
In 2015, he reported to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unite to serve as the S2 officer. In 2018, Lieutenant Colonel Doherty assumed command of 2nd Radio Battalion. After completing his command assignment, Lieutenant Colonel Doherty was selected to attend the Marine Corps War College. He also served as a military faculty member at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College. In 2023, he was promoted to colonel and served as the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine J2.
